Forgeron 2006 Merlot
Forgeron is the french word for blacksmith. Fitting then that Forgeron Cellars is located on the former site of a blacksmith shop in Walla Walla. This 2006 Merlot has 10% Petit Verdot and is sourced from Boushey (60%), Klipsun (30%) and Lonesome Springs (10%). The nose emits dusty blackberry and some heat. There is lots going on in the mouth on this one. Smoke, cherries, spice, and oak up front; slight pause in the mid palate and then a gorgeous finish with anise, tobacco and balanced acid. What a great wine this is! Awesome with or without food. Forgeron's website suggests pairing this wine with a hearty bean soup with sausage or a herb encrusted pork loin. I completely concur, especially the soup with sausage. In fact, I think this wine would be fabulous with a sausage pizza.
